It was discovered by William Herschel on October 1784. The galaxy is a member of the NGC 1023 group of galaxies in the Local Supercluster. It has an H II nucleus. In 1999, the Hubble Space Telescope imaged NGC 891 in infrared.
Supernova SN 1986J was discovered on August 21, 1986 at apparent magnitude 14.
The surrounding area of NGC891 present a huge amount of faint NGC and PGC catalog galaxies as shown in this annotated image.

NGC891 fue descubierta por William Herschel en octuble de 1784. La galaxia es un miembro del Supercluster Local de galaxias NGC, situadas dentro de un radio de 110 años luz de la Vía Láctea. Contiene un núcleo de HII. En 1999 el telescopio espacilal Hubble fotografió NGC891 en el infrarrojo.
En agosto de 1986 se decubrió en esta galaxia la supernova SN1986J con una margnitud aparente de 14.
La zona que rodea NGC891 presenta una gran cantidad de galaxias débiles del catálogo NGC y PGC como se muestra en la imagen etiquetada.
