M65, M66 & NGC3628 - The Leo Triplet (ED)
Leo

Small group of galaxies about 35 million light-years away.
Picture taken with Long Perng ED80.

This group of galaxies consists of the Messier objects M65 (NGC3623) and M66 (NGC3627) as well as the edge-on spiral NGC3628. These three galaxies, the heart of the M66 group, form a beautiful and photogenic group which is frequently referred to as the Leo Triplet. Lying at a distance of some 35 million light years, it is probably physically related to the M96 group.

The slightly more distant S0 or "early" Sa galaxy NGC3593 is probably another member of the group, not in this image.

Messier 65 (also known as NGC3623) is an intermediate spiral galaxy. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1780.

Messier 66 (also known as NGC3627) is an intermediate spiral galaxy. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1780. M66 is about 96 thousand light-years across with striking dust lanes and bright star clusters along sweeping spiral arms.

NGC3628 is an unbarred spiral galaxy. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784. It has an approximately 300,000 light-years long tidal tail.
